The aim of this first week is to orient you towards persuasive speaking in general as well as the specific type of persuasive talk that you will be creating and delivering on this course, an elevator pitch (EP): a short persuasive speech usually lasting 0.5 to 2 minutes. Its purpose is to convince the audience of the validity and feasibility of your idea - often in order to gain either funding or win a money prize, such as in the MIT example videos seen in Assignment 3.
In addition, you will get to know the other course participants and introduce yourself by meeting your co-students in Zoom. You'll be asked to prepare certain info to share with your co-students, but the main idea is to break the ice and let us see 'who' is participating in this course. Therefore, please already be aware that you need to have a webcam and be prepared to show your face at least a few times during this course if meeting online.
This week consists of three assignments. The first one (A1) will happen together during our Kick-off meeting (please remember that you will need to prepare for it beforehand). The other two assignments can be completed at your own pace by the given deadlines. Please remember to give yourself enough time during the week to progress through the assignments. Note also that the forum tasks normally require responding to other students' posts, so don't leave them until the last evening.
To sum up this first Week has three assignments:
- Assignment 1 (A1): Deadline Tuesday (during the Kick-off session, or through the alternative assignment by Tuesday 23:59 if unable to attend) of Week 1;
- A2: Deadline Friday 23:59 of Week 1;
- A3: Deadline Monday 23:59 ('last day' of Week 1).

This assignment requires some preparation beforehand, so please read carefully! There are a few steps to prepare before you'll carry them out with each other in our live Zoom meeting during this first week.
The assignment is split into three parts:
1. Preparing the speech,
2. Turning up to the live Zoom session to meet everyone and present it, and
3. Listening during the session carefully to each other and identifying then sharing afterwards traits/ characteristics you admire and would like to learn to emulate.
Part 1 has several steps:
You'll prepare to introduce yourself in a short 1-2 minute speech. This speech must include the following information with a twist:
- Your name,
- Your school and field of study, e.g. Landscape architecture, Automation systems, etc.,
- Number of years you've been studying,
- Your evaluation of yourself as a persuasive speaker. But! The twist is this, do not only evaluate yourself as you currently are, but mention one or two aspects you would like to possess in the near or distant future :). Consider mentioning a role model (actual person alive or deceased) that you aspire to be like if that would help you list the characteristics you value in a persuasive speaker. Practise your little speech at least a couple of times before we meet in Zoom.
