Welcome to Fibres and Fibre Products 2023 course!
See you on Tu 5.9.23 at 8:15 (hall A2, Undergraduate Centre, address: Otakaari 1 X, A wing (eastern end of building, opposite end of building compared to the main entrance)
Lecture schedule shown on schedule file (below).
All the Best
Thad + Eero
Responsible teacher: professor Thaddeus "Thad" Maloney (thaddeus.maloney(at)aalto.fi)
Second teacher: University Lecturer Eero Hiltunen (eero.hiltunen(at)aalto.fi)
Content:
The course will cover various aspects of fiber structure, chemistry and physics. The technology of fiber production and fiber processing will be covered. Application of fibers in paper, packaging and composites will be taught. The main focus will be on natural cellulosic fibers.
Selected important fiber analysis methods will be taught and practiced shortly in laboratory group exercise.
Assessment Methods and Criteria: Lectures, exercises, self-study for exam (grade based both on exam 75% and lab group exercise 25%)
Study Material: Lecture slides and selected reading
Laboratory Group Exercise
One student participates to one lab session lasting about 4 hours - more info on lab schedule week 37
The students will learn to identify fibers, measure their properties and ascertain which types of end uses are best for different fibers. Students will study mostly natural fibers. After being taught some basic fiber analysis methods (Light microscopy, FS5 Fiber analyser, SEM) the students will use these techniques to quantify the fibers. The idea will be to identify the generic class of the fibers to the extent possible and to determine what type of properties these fibers have. Based on the fiber properties, students will assess what kind of products these fibers could be used in. Students will work in small groups.
Dr. Eero Hiltunen is responsible for the teaching the laboratory exercises.
Mr. Tonmoy Saha will act as laboratory teaching assistant.
