    • 1. Self-assessment - beginning of the course (Period I)

The purpose of this first assignment is

      • To evaluate the current status of your academic skills and set goals regarding which skills you want to improve or develop during this course. As a result you will be able to choose relevant optional assignments in the course.

      • To clarify or vocalize from your perspective, the purpose of your master' studies and set goals for your master's degree. As a result you will be able to make a justified and goal-oriented personal study plan for your master's degree.

      • The workload of this assignment is about 0,25 cr = 6-7 h

      Instructions:

Read through the instructions first to get an overall understanding on the assignment and then complete the written parts according to the instructions.

      PART 1

      1. Complete this SWOT exercise (.pdf), it will help you analyze your development needs in the context of studies and academic skills.

      2. Based on the swot, write at least ten sentences where you describe which study related skills you want to, or you think you should improve and/or develop during this course. If you have you completed your BSc degree in the Bachelor's programme in Electrical Engineering in Aalto, read also the instruction at the bottom of this instruction.

      PART 2

      1. The starting points for master's studies vary a lot. Roughly three different perspectives can be categorised. Think for a moment: what group do you belong to or are you between two groups or are there traits from all of them?:

      • No clear direction for studies yet. You may be wondering something like: What should I study and why? Where am I aiming at with my studies? What motivates me, where am I good at?
      • Quite clear direction in studies and some ideas regarding career after graduation. You may be wondering something like: I know what I want to study but I'm not sure what is expected in the industry/of graduates. I'm interested in many things but I'm not sure where should I focus in my studies.
      • A clear direction in studies and already have eg. a job in a desired professional field. You may be wondering however something like: Where is my career focus? Could there be something I could provide to the field? How to develop further besides regular studies? Is this it? Is there something else my field of study/profession could provide?

      2. The purpose of the university studies is to equip graduates with such knowledge, skills and attitudes that allow you to thrive in your chosen field. Now write at least ten sentences, where you describe what do you you want to know, what do you want to be able to do and what kind of an engineer do you want to be after your graduation? If you struggle forming these goals, you can use these extra exercises to organize your thoughts regarding your master's studies and your goals for the degree:

Based on your self-reflection in this assignment, do you have open questions about courses, specialisations, career choices etc? Write down your questions and book a meeting with your mentor.

Aalto ELEC BSc graduate: During your BSc studies you have completed courses ELEC-A0110 Johdatus opiskeluun Sähkötekniikan kandidaattiohjelmassa and ELEC-A0120 Opintojen suunnittelu where you have developed different study-related skills. Look through the study skills assigments you have completed in your second year of bachelor's studies: https://mycourses.aalto.fi/course/search.php?search=ELEC-A0120 (you should be able to see your submissions if you haven't archived the course). If possible, use your previous assigments to help you asses, how your study skills have developed during your bachelor's studies, and what academic skills you should develop further during this course.

    • 2. The impact of an electrical engineer in society
      • This exercise supports the development of sustainability competencies. It provides the students an opportunity to reflect upon the impact of their own potential interventions (e.g., development actions, management decisions) during their careers. The tools for reflection focus on future thinking, normative thinking and systems thinking competencies.
      • The workload of this assignment is about 1,5 cr = 40 hours of work

      Materials:
      Part 1: Read the material

      • Look through the entire material first to get an overall picture.
      • Read through the materials in the given order. If reading feels difficult, you can try pomodoro (http://pomodorotechnique.com/) or other similar techniques to concentrate better.
      • Make notes of the thoughts which the material evokes. You can use the following questions:
-Imagine what kind of moral questions you might come across in your career? How would you act in a conflict situation considering the approaches mentioned in the book?
-Think about your own career ten years from now. What kind of position are you in? What kind of responsibilities do you have? What kind of ethical reflection does your position require?
-Assess what kind of possibilities you have as an engineer to promote sustainable development based on Raworth's Donut model. How can you, as an individual engineer, question the framework of continuous growth?
-How can you consider planetary boundaries in your own activities as an engineer? How can you promote a more socially and economically sustainable society?

      Part 2: Write an essay

Write a three page essay in which you reflect upon your own values, goals, opportunities to influence and your agency in relation to the themes presented in the source material. Briefly explain in a few sentences which materials you have read. Reflect upon the text based on your notes and following questions:

-How do you assess your impact upon society as a representative of the engineering profession? How do you see your responsibility as a technology developer?
-What kind of mark do you want to leave on society with your achievements? What motivates you to pursue those achievements?
-What possibilities do you have to bring about a more sustainable society? What does it require of you as an engineer?
      - How should we change the way we think in order to live according to the principles of sustainable development?

You may disagree with the material but justify your point of view.
An approved assignment requires your own reflection based on the material. Simply referencing the material is not enough nor is just your own unsubstantiated opinions without references to the source material.

Font size used in your writing should be 12, length of the essay at least three pages. The structure of the essay should include introduction, body text, conlusion and references.
For references you can use either IEEE (numeric citation system) or Harvard (author-date system, e.g. as used by Monash University, Australia).

Submit the essay by 15 October here.

You can update your plan later whenever needed. General instructions for study plan submission can be found in Into (your programme page) under "planning your studies".
