Welcome to Biolab III laboratory course!
The course comprises of two independent projects. In both projects the participants will mainly work in pairs. In addition, there will be reporting, assignments and presentations/discussions during the course.
In the first project (weeks 9-11) you will use baker's yeast for expression of a therapeutic protein. You will culture genetically modified yeast strains, collect the analysis material and analyze the products. The work in this project will be done according to protocols and predefined schedule.
In the second project (weeks 12-13 and 15), you will use BioBricks to build expression constructs in E. coli. The project will be planned and conducted more freely in pairs within the given result requirements and time frames.
Because of students´ spring break there will not be teaching on 28.3.-3.4.
As we have a capacity limit in the teaching laboratory we have to divide the class at least into two working groups. This is why you will not be present in the lab in all of the times previously marked in Sisu / MyCourses. You will work in pairs and in small groups, grouping for yeast project (first three or four weeks of the course) will open after the registration period for the course closes (opens on 20.2.), opening will be announced via MyCourses e-mail.The lab work will take place in Kemistintie 1, laboratory space C305.
It is important to attend the first lecture on Monday, February 26th! We will go through the course contents, organization and confirm the groups for the experimental work. On Tuesday 27.2. we will in turn concentrate on the theory of the E. coli project, practical work of which you will plan yourselves.

First three weeks of the course will be completed by following a pre-designed timetable in two groups. Please note that there might be some changes to the timetable during the course.
Please note: although the latter weeks of the course (E. coli project, weeks 12-13 and 15) are supposed to be more freely planned among students, prepare to have the lab days available. Not all students can finish their project e.g. on week 12.
