Topic outline

  • Personal Exploration Course 2024

    • The objective of the course is to create a challenging environment for action where you:

      • Have the courage to experiment with your ideas with a brave and open-minded attitude.
      • Control the creative process by documenting and managing the process according to the schedule.
      • Combine a creative process and free expression so that at the end of the course, you can introduce concrete artefacts related to the course topic.
      • Can reflect your creative process in a written form.
      • Can also comment on and discuss other's creative processes.

The 2024 theme will be (Mis)Placing Matters. The ideas of Mary Douglas have inspired the theme in her book Purity and Danger: An Analysis of Concepts of Pollution and Taboo (1966). Although the theme can be interpreted in many ways, it also points towards how we choose and use materials in our practices and our daily lives. Douglas writes that when matter is in the wrong place, it is perceived as dirt, something impure. When matter is in the right place, it is perceived as natural or normal.

This year, we will travel to Koli for an excursion at the beginning of the course and in addition to Priska Falin, there will be two co-teachers: Helen Felcey and Pia Oksanen.

Helen Felcey is a ceramics-based artist, educator and curator, currently teaching at Liverpool Hope University within the School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Pia Puu Oksanen is a psychotherapist (cognitive and systemic approach) and, in addition, works as a human rights expert on gender & sexuality issues for Amnesty Finland.
