Guidelines for preparing for the review presentation (presenter group)
In a group of 3-4 students, your task is to review an article by summarizing and discussing its key concepts and insight provided on service operations management (in your own words). You are expected to 1) prepare a presentation with slides for around 10 min presentation. In the review, you should focus on the key take-aways from the article and describe the key points people should learn from the paper.
In addition, analyze the main contribution of the reviewed article (e.g. concepts, frameworks, propositions, models, theories) or the value provided in the paper for business practitioners in terms of recommendations, guidelines, experiences, best practices or other valuable knowledge.
An example presentation structure could include (these are good questions for the discussion on the presented articles, too):
- What did the article explore and why is it important?
- What did the study find, what were the results?
- Why were the results important, what did we learn?
- Your personal reflection on the study, your view of the value of the study?
- You may also want to add examples of further readings on the topic (optional).
It may be a good idea to prepare notes for discussion points from the article. If you do, you can add the questions or discussion points as the last slide on your slide deck.
Each group will review one article. The groups are formed by the faculty and announced in the course schedule on the main page of the MyCourses workspace.
Guidelines for preparing to the discussion after the presentation (all course participants)
All participants of the course should read the same article as the presenter group, and prepare to discuss your views on the same questions - basically with same preparation but without the presentation.
- You may consider additional viewpoints or questions about the article to ask from your peer students, the presenting group, and the faculty.
- The discussion will be facilitated by the course staff.
- Please reflect on your own learning from the article and the discussion in your learning diary.
Remember that it is our job to learn as much as possible about the article and its theme. No one acts as an opponent of the presentation, but as a reflector and fellow learner. So, the idea is not to 'oppose' the presenting group but to discuss the article contents for richer and wider view to it for people in attendance. There may be differences in viewpoints on what is important and relevant - and why - but that should enrich the learning experience for all involved.
Requirements for the review presentation
- The presentation is expected to be ca. 10 min long (give or take a minute or two).
- Submit a pdf of your presentation slides through MyCourses with possible discussion points prepared for the discussion part (these are not required).
- How many slides you use; who will do the talking etc. is up to you. However, you should present the main idea of the article, its key concepts or framework, main findings, and contributions.
- Include the name of the article and names of the students in the team on the title page of your slides. (NOTE: To protect your privacy, don't include your student number in the returned file.)
- Include a table of how you divided your work per team member in the end of the submitted pdf (no need to discuss this or show it in the presentation).
- DL for submitting presentation is right after the session where your article review was presented.
Evaluation of the review
You get the same score as your teammates (unless there is need to adjust evaluation within teams due to uneven contribution).
Evaluation criteria:- How well the presentation succeeded in identifying the key messages in the article (content)?
- How easy was it to understand and follow the presentation (argumentation)?
- How well the structure, delivery, and the clarity of the presentation supported the argumentation and understanding of the content (presentation quality)?
- The quality of argumentation and discussion after the presentation.
Submit your article review presentation below
