The exam was arranged in MyCourses as an online exam, an "exam assignment". It opened (became visible) at 09:00 and ended at 12 o'clock noon. The normal Zoom link of the lectures was used during the exam for communication about possible technical issues.
The completion of the course consists of lecture materials, coursebook and written materials (available also online), individual and group assignments, and the open-book/online exam. For creating the groups for the group assignments, please register your name/group using the wiki document ("GROUPS").
Workload Lectures 22h, group work 56h, independent work 57h
Learning Outcomes At this course the students learn user interface and interaction design. After completing the course, students are able to develop an interactive user interface that can be used as a prototype (for further elaboration with users and customers) or an interactive application for usability testing. Students get to know how to use user-centred principles, guidelines and patterns in the design and implementation of user interfaces.
Content The design and construction of interactive user interfaces. Use of basic user interface elements and style guides.
Assessment Methods and Criteria Lectures and examination, exercises.
Study Material In order to enable access to learning materials via various offline and online channels, you may user either the book by Shneiderman & Plaisant (available from Aalto's library) or the book by Galitz (available online via Aalto's library access). In your assigments (and in the exam) you are requested to use the material as reference. Please refer clearly to the material that you have used as reference material. Also in the exam you are asked to indicate which of the books you have been using.
Shneiderman, Ben & Plaisant, Catherine: Designing the User Interface - Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction
Chapters (4th ed.): 2, 3.3, 3.7, 7, 8, 12, 13
Chapters (5th ed.): 2, 3.3, 3.7, 6, 7, 11, 12
Chapters (6th ed.): 3, 4, 8, 9, 12, 14or the book
Galitz, Wilbert:
The Essential Guide to User Interface Design: An Introduction to GUI Design Principles and Techniques (Available in electronic form via Aalto University library / Proquest Ebook Central)Additionally, you are required to familiarise yourself with the following guidelines/material so that you are able to use it in your assignments and refer to the content appropriately:
Lewis, Clayton & Rieman, John: Task-Centered User Interface Design - A Practical Introduction (Web-book, http://hcibib.org/tcuid), Chapter: 3
Smith, Sidney L. & Mosier, Jane N.: User interface design guidelines (www.hcibib.org/sam)
Also, Jeff Johnson's book "Designing with the Mind in Mind : Simple Guide to Understanding User Interface Design Guideline (available via Aalto's library access to Proquest eBook Central) offers a broad range of examples connected to user interface design guidelines.
Substitutes for Courses Replaces former course CSE-E5820 / T-121.5300 User interface construction.
Prerequisites CS-C3120 Human-computer Interaction / CSE-C3800 User Interfaces and Usability or equivalent basics in user-centred design and usability.
Grading Scale 0-5
Passing the course requires the completion of all individual and group assignments and the exam. Assignments 1 and 2 are evaluated with "pass/fail" (you must pass). Assignment 3 is done individually (evaluated with normal scale 0-5, weight 20% of the final grade) and assignment 4 in a group (evaluated with normal scale 0-5, weight 40% of the final grade).
