Welcome to LC-1117 Integrated Oral and Written Skills for Bachelor students in Data Science!
This course is designed, among other things, to teach students to "[r]ecognise the strategies and elements that enhance clarity and audience-friendliness in both oral and written communication" and to be able to "[a]pply these strategies and elements in oral presentations and writing related to their field of study" (LC-1117 Course description and learning outcomes in SISU).
Therefore, this course will require you to become quickly oriented towards the elements of persuasive communication, as well as being reasonably aware of current topics in your own field (and related ones) in order to be able to critically analyse and debate related topics. The first pre-course task is, therefore, designed to get you already thinking about what issues, problems, controversial concepts or attitudes already exist within your own field and even in the wider world. The other pre-course tasks relate to practical preparations.
Before our first class, please complete the 3 pre-course tasks as listed below:
Pre-course task 1: Brainstorm and find examples of current controversial topics primarily in the field of data science but also more broadly in the fields of science & technology for the first assignment (=team presentation), and possibly other assignments. Tip: You can consider browsing newspapers, scientific journals & magazines & websites for possible topic ideas that interest you and relate to your own field. Write down 1) the issue, 2) what makes it controversial, & 3) where do you stand. Please come prepared to discuss your findings during our first classes.
Pre-course task 2: Acquire an access token to Otakaari 1. Please note that the hallways are locked and you will need to have a valid access token to Otakaari 1 to be able to come to the classroom. For more information and how to get one, see Aalto News on Otakaari 1 and acquiring an access tokenPre-course task 3: Bring a laptop and a pen with you. Our classes will be held on campus in a classroom but we will be using MyCourses (and other online resources) continually during our classes. I will also share all the course materials via MyCourses and will generally not distribute handouts on paper. Therefore, please make sure that you can bring a laptop. Having said all this, you will, however, also need a pen or a pencil for one of the activities during our first class. So, please also bring a pen or a pencil. Our classes are held on Tuesdays, starting at 10:15 a.m. I will post a schedule with details to the front page of our MyCourses-site during our first class. We usually have two sessions, one in the morning and the other after a lunch break of 45 minutes. A tip: it can be a good idea to bring a little something with you to eat as the lunch queues at noon can sometimes be quite long (not to mention the walking distance...). Campus restaurants and their menus are listed in KanttiinitOur first class is on Tuesday, Sept 12th, at 10:15 in room M203 Otakaari 1.N.B. As stated in SISU, remote or "hybrid" participation in class will not be possible.See you in class!Best wishes,Yoonjoo
