LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will develop advanced skills for working with night exterior scenes on location. Students will obtain experience of working as a head of department, responsible for the management and scheduling of their own and crew’s work.

At the conclusion of the course student will be able to…

  • Understand how and apply in practice how to create and modify atmosphere with light in night exterior environment.
  • Apply how to challenge or take advantage on heritage of “night look” and night lighting as storytelling tool in filmmaking.
  • Justify and learn the importance of usage of colour contrast alongside the contrast of light intensity.
  • Evaluate and apply new methods to collaborate with other team members in challenging circumstances.
  • Create and execute vision that is required according to given references?

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    Practice based learning during workshop that develops the understanding, artistic working methods and practical experience when working with special night atmosphere in filmmaking process.

    Students will explore the task: how emotions can be visualised and expressed in cinematic storytelling? Course, Night Life 1, is focusing on one very specific and one of the most demanding and fascinating field in filmmaking – lighting a night exterior scene.

    Course is divided in two periods that are connected to each-others.

    First stage (period 3) students will concentrate in artistic, practical & technical planning supervised by different teachers and industry professionals.

    Second stage (period 4), practical execution is guided by teachers and industry professionals and final outcomes will be evaluate by same advisors and teachers.

    Students will plan the execution of a given scene that is focusing on visualisation of night atmosphere and night look. Students will work in head of department role for their crew. During workshop student will get familiar with a variety of different kinds of artistic approaches, practical tools, and cinematic methods.

    3rd. year BA-students in cinematography will work as electricians during the workshop.

    Final scenes will be finalised in colour grading process, and they will be screened and evaluated together with other students, crew, external advisors, and teachers.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Active and regular participation to group working and lectures, accomplishment of given tasks, leadership skills and self-reflection about the learning process during the workshop.

    Evaluation criteria based on student’s crew and own reflection about their own learning process, co-operation skills and students own share of co-operation. Student’s own progress evaluated during different stages of the workshop and in common feed-back session at the end of the workshop.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.

    Participating at the opening day of the workshop is mandatory.
