LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Understand the core concepts, terminology, and frameworks used in corporate venturing
• Analyze the motivations, structures, and processes underlying corporate venture capital (CVC), venture building, and venture clienting
• Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to design or assess a corporate venturing initiative
• Evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs), success factors, and challenges of corporate-startup collaborations
• Demonstrate the ability to work in teams to develop strategies, recommendations, and solutions for various corporate venturing scenarios
• Navigate responsible usage of AI in both academic work and corporate venturing contexts

Content

    This course provides a deep dive into corporate venturing, exploring how established corporations participate in entrepreneurial activities and engage with startups through mechanisms such as corporate venture capital, venture building, and venture clienting. Students will learn about the strategic rationales, structures, processes, and outcomes of corporate venturing initiatives. The course adopts a blended learning approach, combining weekly pre-assignments (e.g., readings, online videos, and assignments), weekly in-class activities (e.g., case discussions and student team presentations), and hands-on project work.

    Registration: Limited to max 80 students. The course is targeted at Master’s level students interested in corporate venturing (primarily for students of industrial engineering and management, but also open for students interested in entrepreneurship and new business development in other Master’s programs at Aalto University). If there are more registrations than study places available, priority will be given to the students of the Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Management.
