LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, students can:
ILO1 - design, implement, analyze, and report the experimental procedures in the wet lab on biological phenomena and bioprocesses.

ILO2 - understand and interpret metabolic responses in bioprocessing and adapt methods to analyze and tune them for industrial applications for improved process efficiency.

ILO3 - apply their theoretical knowledge, problem-solving, and practical skills to develop processes and products
ILO4 - apply modern techniques of measurements, analysis, and control at different levels of examinations (molecular, cellular, population, reactor, process, plant)
ILO5 - master the experimental planning, time management, data analysis, and interpretation within a team.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The objective of the course is to provide hands-on experience in bioprocess technology in laboratory and pilot scale. The course consists of two laboratory experiments: 1) Cultivation of a genetically modified Escherichia Coli strain in a 1,5 L laboratory-scale bioreactor for the production of a recombinant protein, product purification, and product analysis.  2) Pilot-scale fermentation process for the large-scale production of sugar alcohol, various downstream processing steps for product purification, and process analytics.
