Choosing an electronic textbook - General instructions

Choose an electronic textbook that is literature-based. In other words, choose a textbook that contains primarily written text and not pictures or illustrations.
Introductory books to your field may be a successful choice.

Your book should be accessible through the Aalto library services, Aalto-Primo (previously Aalto-Finna; ProQuest Ebook Central is good), as both you and your teacher will be working with this book throughout the course. (Once you have found a book you like, check Availability "Your institution has unlimited access to this book" would be to prefer to one with "one-copy-access/single-user-license" only.

Tip: Students in previous courses who have worked with a book from O'Reilly have commented that, yes, it might have been a good idea to follow the teacher's advice to select another one. It seems the texts/text style/format is not suitable for the course assignments. So in this iteration of the course, let's avoid books from O'Reilly altogether. If this is a problem to you, please let me know.

Instructions for access

Search for an eBook from your field of study!

1. Go to LINK: Aalto-Primo
Sign in in the top right-hand corner.

2. Next to the "Search anything" field, select ADVANCED SEARCH.

3. Select "Search for" > Search for books, journals, and thesis. Material Type > Books. Language > English

4. Search filters: add a search term (e.g. film) (You can come back later and change this)

5. "Tweak your results" (to the left): Availability > Available online; Open Access. Resource Type > Books. [Author/Creator > [limit if you like but best to leave empty first?] Subject > [select what is relevant for you within your field of study] Language > English APPLY FILTERS

6. Modify your filters and search terms as needed.

TIPS:

Combine, expand, or limit your search through the operators AND, OR, NOT. Please remember to write the operators with capital letters.
Use * as a wildcard character to search for variants of a word, for instance, test* (tests, tester, testing, etc.)
Use ? as a wildcard to replace a single letter, for instance, wom?n for woman and women.
Use (...) parenthesis to group query words, for instance, technology AND (sustainable OR environmental).
Use "..." quotation marks, if you want to search for a compound term, for instance, "global warming".

7. Choose an eBook that is a textbook, i.e. not a novel, article, or other such literature, and that does not contain mainly pictures or illustrations. The book should also not be an edited* textbook with isolated chapters/articles written by different authors. (Check inside the book, if editor/s, ed/eds/ appear next to the names. The Table of Contents, TOC, can also give you hints.)
Introduction to... may take you to a gold mine.

Note that books with single-user licenses ~~may not be the best option, i.e. only one reader allowed at a time. However, if you log out in between, it should work. Then others, including the teacher, will have access to the book, too.~~ is not a good option. Please avoid if possible.

8. Copy the eBook link and the full reference so that you can easily include it in your ePortfolio. (Make use of the "'cite this/Cite Book" - information, e.g. APA, but double-check that the information is correct and complete by opening the book and looking at the first pages. Many times the information is not correct, for instance, the "ed/eds" for editors may be left out.)

Now start your portfolio

Download the template (See e.g., TEXTBOOK PROJECT overview page. Click on TEXTBOOK PROJECT in the grey left-hand menu.)
Add to the document name: TB-YourfirstnameLastnameinitial_date_whenyouupload[update this every time you upload]DDMMYY_TA1. Example: TB-AnnastiinaAuvinenA_02032023_-TA1 (TA1 indicates the latest assignment you are adding to the portfolio]
Add your name, period 4, year 2022-2023 to the front page of the portfolio
Complete the Introduction. Here you can also communicate any specific requests/wishes/needs you may have to your teacher.
Add the reference to the book you have chosen with proper formatting:

Author's/s' Last name/s, First name initials. (Year of publication). Textbook title. (edition.) Place: Publisher and Ebook central (ebrary) link to your portfolio, under assignment 1. You can also add the primo.aalto.fi-link. (NOTE that you should also add Place, not only the publisher.) The link should be clickable. If your book is 1st edition**, this doesn't need to (= should not) be mentioned. This is the default. Bold face is used here only for emphasis.

Submit your updated portfolio to MyCourses (doc or docx format)***
Also submit the full reference to your textbook to the MyC textbook survey.

Note

Your teacher will either approve or reject your textbook choice. (If you find two or three interesting books when searching, take note on the other too, in case you need to change.) As you will not have an overview of the textbook assignments in this course yet, your teacher helps you with selecting a book that should work for all the assignments. (Edited collections don't, for instance.)

Check Assignment 1 evaluation before continuing to Assignment 2. (Grades, top-left corner of MyC under the white box in the orange field that shows/hides the sidebar menu). Do not continue to TA2 before you have received a "Textbook accepted" from your teacher. (While you wait, you can work on the oral assignments.)

* Edited collection = the book chapters are written by different authors (contributors) and are (generally) "stand-alone" chapters or articles although they share a common theme. The book has been edited "compiled" usually by a group of authors (who may also have written a chapter or two) but sometimes by only one person. This type of book often has a section at the beginning where the editor/s introduce/s the different chapters or themes, sometimes also the chapter authors at some length. In a bibliography or list of references, you recognize these books when looking at how the authors are presented: (Ed.) (Eds.). For examples see LINK

** Not to be confused with an edited collection, as above, where Ed./Eds. stand after the author/s (editors) in the bibliographical entry. This ed. refers to changes in the text and is denoted as rev. /revised or 2nd ed./edition 3rd ed. etc. in the bibliography (First edition, 1st ed., is the default and thus need (=should) not be mentioned. Excess information. See link above for examples.)
