General research skills assignment, for 3 credits
You have several options to choose from, please see below.
Choose one option and write an essay of approximately 2 pages and return it to MyCourses. Write down the things/knowledge you found the most useful/interesting in the text you read, so that the reader of your essay will learn from your text. After the deadline for this essay, you will receive the essays of two other students of this course which you will read and give feedback on.
In this assignment you will:
· read a text (see the options below), write an essay on it
· read the essays of two peers of this course
· give feedback on the essays of the two peers
Read a text and write and essay about that.
1) Read book:
A New Approach to Research Ethics: Using Guided Dialogue to Strengthen Research Communities (read the Introduction and chapters 1 and 2)

2) Read book:
Mastering Your PhD: Survival and Success in the Doctoral Years and Beyond (read
6 chapters of your choice, approximately 60 pages)

3) Find some other book relevant to a doctoral student. Examples for
this assignment could be some text about speed reading, about different writing
techniques or some other general skill relevant for a doctoral student. Agree
on your book or chapters in a book with the course staff before you start
reading.
4) Gather some other relevant information in the internet, through
interviews etc and produce a collection of tips or other guidance for doctoral
students. Agree your topic with course staff before you start.
5) Do something else that you find useful for your learning and preferably to others, too. Agree on your plan with course staff beforehand.
Submit your work as a pdf file to MyCourses by the deadline given. Mention your name and student number in the text and name the file with your last name.
Give feedback on the essay of a peer of this course (individual work)
The course staff will send you two essays of your peers. Please read them and write down feedback to your peers and send them by e-mail to the course staff. Please use the email address elec-l0902@aalto.fi. The course staff will send your feedback to the authors of the texts, so please be constructive in your feedback.
