Assignment 4: Your presentation topic and purpose
It is now time to establish your presentation topic and purpose.
Your topic should be (a) from your field of study and (b) a topic that interests and motivates you (it can also be something that you have already worked on in another context). Try to maximize the usefulness of this course by practising a presentation that you truly care about. The final presentation will be 8-10 minutes long.
For this course, the intended audience is an educated but non-expert audience (i.e. not an engineer from your field).
Answer the following questions:
(1) What is your presentation topic?
(2) What background information would an educated non-expert audience need about this topic?
(3) How could an educated non-expert audience relate to this topic? Does your topic have a connection with the day-to-day lives of people? If not, what connection could you make to convey the relevance of your topic to this audience (i.e. why should they care?)
(4) What questions would an educated non-expert audience want you to answer about the topic? In other words, clearly define for yourself the purpose of your talk in the form of a clear 'purpose statement': The purpose of this talk/ presentation is to ... .
With that purpose in mind, also consider what might be its main contents? And what information might be "too much to handle" for this audience?
Answer the questions above in some detail as this is an important part of your preliminary planning.
The teacher will respond to your topic proposal using traffic light colours:
Green=topic seems to be suitable and well thought-out (=acceptable);
Amber=topic might need some further work and clarification, might be too broad and general in scope, tentative but not absolute acceptance until A6 seen or topic discussed with teacher;
Red= topic not acceptable for the purposes of this course or assignment; a new topic will need to be suggested by the student. Contact the teacher ASAP to discuss your options.
