First Assignment (3 cr) - My Leadership and Volunteer Motivation (DL 7.10.)
1. My motives and expectations
Why are you volunteering in Junction? Why do you want to serve Junction event in the role of a team or group lead? Consider your motives from different view points. What were all the triggers and drivers that made you to participate?
2. My role and task in Junction 2020
What is your role in this year's Junction event? What does the role require from you? What are the most critical issues? Describe the requirements as well as you know at the moment.
3. My previous experiences in a team (as a member, as a leader, as an observer)
What are your previous experiences in teams? You can think all kinds of group or team experiences (hobbies, sports, studies, work, army...). What were the most positive experiences? What were the worst ones, if any? Describe what have you learnt from those? And how do these experiences affect to your expectations from the forthcoming Junction event? You can also review your previous experiences from the Slush. What would you like to do differently this year?
4. My leadership principles - a preliminary version
What are the guiding principles you are wishing/aiming to follow in your leadership role in the Junction event? Principles refer to rules, values and practices you notice that you follow or wish to follow in your leadership role. List your principles and summarise after each principle why do you consider the principle important in your leadership practice. Consider also what made you choose just these principles (for example previous experiences, literature, exemplary role models...).
5. My leadership vision – a preliminary version
What do you wish that your team members will tell about you as a team or group lead after the Junction event? Imagine a situation where a friend of your team member has asked about you as a leader. What would you like the team member will tell about you and your way of being and acting as leader? Write a description/a story.
6. The basis of the motivation for volunteering in a special event
The last part of the assignment is based on the article about the motives of volunteering in special events. Read the article and summarise the main points of the study concerning the motives to volunteer. Compare the findings presented in the study to your own motives to volunteer in Junction and also the initial motives of your team members. In which way are your and your team members' motives similar to the motives presented in the paper? And in which ways do they differ from those presented in the study?
