Workshop 1. Nested Scales & Time Frames
Completion requirements
Due: Wednesday, 26 January 2022, 12:00 PM
Task: Define the qualities and future of our Site through the lens of Resilience
Our site (layer 'study area' in the Basemap.dwg, also shown in the
file Basemap_A3_2000.pdf) has different qualities that are
interconnected in space and time - and that are subject to different
processes of change.
Your team has been given a set of qualities to study, gather
information about them and create a presentation that explains what they
are, how they have changed and are changing - also, consider the future
of the site, what kind of future conditions could
there be in an ideal, sustainable future? Examine how the different
scales of the site interact What are the timeframes/cycles of change
considering the qualities you are working with?
Qualities to focus on
Team 1: Flora & Fauna - Vegetable and animal life
Team 2: Topography & the Blue Network - Ground forms and water circulation
Team 3: The Built Environment - Buildings and structures
Team 4: Social & Cultural - Demography and identity
Team 5: Infrastructure & Services - Enabling elements and the functional mix
Team 6: Mobility & Connections - Routes of different flows
The presentation
The form of the presentation is free (number of pages, presentation
methods, etc.) except these conditions: the file format has to be .pdf;
and your presentation has to end with one 'map' (A3 scale 1:2000, in
the base map on the layer 'study area' - also
framed in on the CAD layout page. The area also shown in the file
Basemap_A3_2000.pdf), where you show your main findings concerning the
qualities of the site - the map should focus on present conditions but
contain information concerning the dynamic transformations
that have happened in the past and that may happen in the future.
The presentation should contain only material you produce yourself -
text, analytical drawings, maps, etc. (these can be based on existing
material, like the base map or satellite images).
Keep the presentation short - be prepared to present the work in 10
minutes. All members of the team should speak during the presentation,
but it will be efficient if only one member of the team shares the
screen.
Goal of the Workshop
By looking at our site and creating presentations on its different
qualities through the lenses of different interacting scales and
timeframes, we get a sense of our site as dynamic layers of different
systems - some natural, some technical and some social
- and this will be a foundation for resilient design that can take into
account all the shifting forces of an area.
Upload the presentation as a pdf-file before noon, on the 26th of January.
