Week 2 prelecture assignment
We have now already met the Dirac's equation and some of its predictions. This week we will continue by analyzing the theory and its predictions. However, the most important consequence of the theory was the realization that the quantum theory must be able to describe systems with changing numbers of particles, leading into second quantization and field operators. Watch the following PBS Space Time video on Dirac's theory and second quantization (12 minutes):
Video mentioned several topics that we will consider this week and also later on the course such as hyperfine splitting, fine structure constant and Lamb's shift. Are these familiar concepts to you already? Can you see now how the usual Schrödinger's wave mechanics formulation is quite incapable of describing systems with changing numbers of particles? Would you have any questions?
