First, watch this short video that explains what is GLIMPSE, an infrared panorama image of the Milky Way made by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. After watching, take a look at the GLIMPSE interactive visualization tools here.

• In the WorldWide Telescope Viewer you can turn the image around and see how it stretches around the sky in the northern and southern hemispheres. You may need to install additional free software for this (Windows only) so if you want to skip it, no problem.
  
• The CDS Aladin Lite Viewer allows a closer inspection of special areas of interest. Use the "Navigate To” button to find fascinating targets. Works without additional software so be sure to try it out!
  

Then, compare the modern view of the Milky Way to Galileo's and Sir William Herschel's, and think where they possibly went wrong and what they got right -and why. No need to write it down this time, but you can if you like, for your own records. When you are done with the assignment, write "done" in the text submission box and you are done (duh).
