In this last exercise you will have the ability to roleplay as planners in a real-world area with an existing ongoing planning project. You will run through two iterations of planning and presenting results and get feedback from Jussi acting as the GM.
This exercise will be made in the same groups (A,B,C,D) as previous ones.
This exercise will be made in the same groups (A,B,C,D) as previous ones.
Practical steps
Your task is to make a development plan for the Uusmäki area. The target which you need to fulfill for the first iteration consists of:
- 300,000 m2 of Gross Floor Area (In giraffe it's GBA = building footprint area * number of floors)
Most of
the GBA needs to be housing so, that the plan incorporates approximately 6000
inhabitants, calculated so, that 45-50 m2 of housing GBA equals one inhabitant.
At least 10% of the GBA needs to be community spaces, public services (e.g.
daycare) and commercial spaces preferably on the ground floor.
You will need to design the key connections of the area:
- greenspaces and ecological corridors
- recreational and light traffic routes
- light rail connection and
- the main collector road as spatial reservations
The area needs to function with
everything in harmony, but sacrifices will have to be made in order to fit the
gross floor area requirement.
You will need to think of the urban typologies of the area: what is the central urban space, what is the residential type and how is it like to live in the area?
Design principles
- Minimum width of street areas are as follows: main collector road 30 meters, side roads 15 meters, alleys inside quarters and light traffic routes 8 meters. These areas include the minimum required street spaces and greenspaces.
- Maximum depth of apartments from daylight window is 8 meters – leading to typical building “thickness” of 10-20 meters.
- A maximum length of buildings is not specified, so you can design long quarter facades.
Take note
of the preliminary design principles in the attached PPTX.
Tools
In this exercise we will continue using Giraffe.
There are currently issues in adding background layers to Giraffe from the city WMS/WFS services, and we will work through
Submission and Evaluation
Prepare a PDF presentation for a jury consisting of imaginary city planners (including an architect, a landscape architect, a museum official, a traffic engineer and a housing & environment official). Format the presentation in landscape so that
you are able to easily share and present it!
Return Format
The presentation should include no more than 5 pages, and contain:
- Site plan of the area (orthoimage = top down view of the map area). Show at least the new and existing buildings and main routes.
- Two aerial 3D images of the area, from which you can see the relative height of the buildings.
- Remember to show the numbers (GBA numbers)!
- Markings and descriptions of the urban spaces and main ideas of the proposal in maximum 2 slides, use e.g. small pictures of streetscape and keywords to communicate the ideas.
Evaluation
- Discussion in Teams: present your slides in the way you would use to convince the imaginary jury of the quality of your solution.
