220210 Preparing for the Lecture - "selfinterlocking, planar panelized catenoids"
We discussed the geometry and structural meaning of curvature by means of many examples in our meetings. In parallel, we discussed the advantages and challenges of curvature of surfaces (with a focus on minimal surfaces), when it comes to physical materials, fabrication and assembly in full scale. In addition there is the aspect of load-bearing feature and architectural feature of these forms.
Download and read the texts below - Reading 01/Reading 02/Reading 03 - in the right order
Follow the idea of using catenoids as a starting point for panelization, rapid assembly, fabrication from planar quadrangular material, self-interlocking properties and so on. How are these anticlastically curved forms used and what is its potential and where are the limits? Look up the terms and things that you are not familiar with.
Summarize the readings (but not as a copy - paste collection from the papers) in the light of the lecture and meeting on 3D tension surfaces / membrane surfaces and also in the light of fabrication technology and material decision.
900 - 1100 words
THIS IS READING 01
- Surface- and Mesh-based Approaches towards a Materialization of Architectural Catenoids
Besides a textile realization of Minimal Surfaces in architecture we can think of many different approaches in materializing spatially curved forms. In this regard patterns, sub-division, etc. play an essential role and cause geometrical, material and detailing questions.

- Rapid assembly of planar quadrangular, self-interlocking modules to anticlastically curved forms
Rapid assembly implies simple and fast fabrication as well as simple (archi-) tectonics enabled by simple or without joints. This paper presents preconditions and principles how planar quadrangular, self-interlocking modules can rapidly be assembled to self-supporting, anticlastically curved forms and focuses to minimal surfaces of catenoids.

- Forms from selfinterlocking, planar panelized catenoids – freedoms & limits
This paper describes the preconditions and principles in order to create a whole world of structurally efficient forms composed of one or more possibly intersecting anticlastic shapes deriving from catenoids and assembled from planar, selfinterlocking modules.
