    Sculpture Now – Kestävä | Vapaus


    Sculpture Now! 2022 themes are parallel and even intersecting formed by two Finnish language words vapaus and kestävä. English counterparts for the kestävä are words like enduring, sustainable, durable, resistant, strong, lasting etc. which individually are not able to cover the variety of contexts it can be used in nor cover the interpretations made of it. English counterparts for the vapaus are freedom and liberty. 

    Approach:

    Sculpture and
    Transitive approach = other techniques and ways of producing art falling into category of 3-dimensional art, or allowing us to interpret the output in respect of 3-dimensional art.

    The themes are loose and allow different interpretations. You can for instance approach the themes from the political societal end considering environment, democracy or resilience, or more from personal perspectives such as human relations or mental health. Vapaus can be associated to words like to veil, to blur, to disguise and to protect and to treasure. Theme Kestävä can also be a feature in your project.

    From the media perspective your approach can vary from sculptural object to installation. Your piece can also have performative depth. There are no limits to materials that can be used, apart from those practical ones such as cost and time. Students wishing to participate should have a good prior knowledge and experience of making contemporary art, and be prepared to work at least one other day on their course project.

    Workshops:
    We have booking for the following workshops: multi material, wood, metal and plaster workshops.  Aforementioned workshops will be open also on Tue, Wed, Thu evenings until 8:00 pm in the first period. This may help you continuing the daytime tasks. Note, evening time workshops are available through online booking system. It is always good to check with studio masters for special requirements.

    Other workshops, such as 3D-printing, laser cutting and NC milling are awailable through online booking system.

    Roel Meijs, Sculpture workshop master, available on Mondays from 12 noon – 16:00 and from Tuesday to Thursday 09:00 – 16:00, good to make appointment! Monday mornings 08:00 – 12:00 are reserved for the workshop maintenans.


    Course Timetable     

    Contact teaching – Ari present, Mondays & Tuesdays 10.1. – 15.2. Students are expected to develop their individual projects through these days. Sculpture Now! will start on Monday 10th with a short introduction and continue with a guest lecture. Monday January 17th we will have Guest lecture.

    Projects are expected to be finalized by Sunday February 13th.

    We will be producing an exhibition, which we will install on Monday 14th. The exhibiotion is open until February 27th. We will have a final critic on Tuesday February 15th (with the group split in two for the necessary corona restrictions, should it be necessary. Group A will be in the morning from 09:15 – 12:00 and group B in the afternoon from 13:00 – 17:00.).

    Vesa-Pekka Herva is Professor and Head of Archaeology. His research interests span from prehistoric to contemporary archaeology and heritage in north-eastern Europe.

    Lecture title: From Rubbish to Treasure – the Magic of Putting it Together

    Tuula Närhinen is visual artist (DFA) based in Helsinki, Finland. Närhinen’s work explores the physical and conceptual underpinnings of pictorial representation. She constructs experimental visual interfaces that connect the observer with the fabric of the world. Images that emerge from this interaction unravel the inherent pictorial potential in naturally occurring events.

    Her works result in spatial installations that, alongside the yielded (photo)graphs, artefacts and renderings, showcase the methods of inscription and the DIY instruments implicated. The poetics of her practice arise from the corporeal enactment and the exposition of the material process.
