LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learning outcomes of the Bachelor’s thesis and seminar focus on developing the student’s skills in conducting academic research in their field, as well as preparing the student for their Master’s studies and working life. More specifically, in the Bachelor’s thesis process students prepare competencies in the following areas:

  1. Goal setting and research approach: The student identifies a research problem in consultation with their supervisor, and develops a research plan, including appropriate research methods.
  2. Command of the topic: The student conducts a comprehensive and critical review of existing literature related to their research question, and, if applicable, collects and analyzes relevant data using appropriate research methods. The student derives meaningful conclusions and discusses their implications.
  3. Communication of research results: The student effectively presents their research results, both orally and in a written format. In addition, the student clearly conveys the key findings and responds to questions about the work. The thesis is written following academic conventions and standards.
  4. Research process: The student develops a project plan for the thesis and implements it in a timely manner. The student effectively manages their research process, drawing on support from their thesis supervisor. They give and receive constructive feedback to improve their own and the work of others.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    In the thesis seminar, students get guidance in their research for Bachelor s Thesis. During the seminar, students will conduct research profiling on their topic in literature databases (Scopus of Web of Science) prepare a 2-page research plan, report the progress of their thesis, present and defend their research results, act twice as an opponent, and participate actively in seminar discussions. Based on the feedback received at the seminar discussions, the students finalize their thesis work.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Research plan and other written assignments, seminar activity, final presentation at the seminar, final version of the thesis. Requirements for passing the course: completing the research plan and other assignments, presenting own thesis draft at the seminar, acting twice as an opponent, attending to 70% of the seminar sessions, and submitting the final thesis. The thesis is supposed to be completed within one semester. Delays can lead to a reduction of the thesis grade. See the course homepage for details.

    Registration:

    The students are divided into thesis groups based on their research plans (around 4-5 weeks after the seminar starts). The group need not be selected when registering to the course.
