  • LC-1090 - Online Preparatory English: Reading and Writing (w)



    • This one credit online course introduces you to some of the the challenges of academic writing.

      There are 5 key areas you will look at:

      a. academic sentences and paragraphs - practising how to write introductions, main (body) paragraphs and conclusions

      b. academic vocabulary - learning key academic words including academic phrases and reporting verbs

      c. academic grammar - focusing on using tenses, passives, prepositions and other important grammar areas

      d. avoiding plagiarism - practising skills in paraphrasing, summarising, in-text referencing and writing reference lists.

      e. academic structure - choosing the best writing models and structures for your writing and submitting an essay

      You will undertake the course in the a-e order listed above and you must complete all the quizzes, assignments and feedback forms in each section before you can progress to the next one.  The exception is forum exercises: because you often need to reply to other students' posts, you can  progress to the next section and reply later when other students have had time to submit. Remember though, the forum exercises must be completed in full to complete the course. Follow the completion bar to track your progress!

      This is a pass/fail course and your work will not be graded. In order to pass the course, you are required simply to complete the quizzes, assignments and forum tasks. Below is a recommended timeline for completing each section.

      After this course you should be able to:

      i. use different sentence and paragraphs structures to write a longer essay comprised of these main elements

      ii. to recognise key academic vocabulary to comprehend and respond to essay question titles

      iii. to employ tenses and other aspects of academic grammar appropriately and write with greater confidence

      iv. to understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism and to utilise key skills so that your work complies with academic regulations

      v. to select an appropriate model for the essay you are writing as a means to to writing an outline and a final essay
