ELEC-A4930 - Astronomical View of the World, Lecture, 10.1.2023-18.4.2023

The Sun and other stars
Before the lecture watch two short videos in the Crash Course Astronomy series: The Sun and Stars.
In the lecture we will go deeper into stars: their development, different kinds of stars, death of the Sun and other kind of stars, and approach black holes, and modern astronomy and astrophysics.
The point of these two videos is to make sure everyone is familiar with some of the key concepts related to stars. On the lecture we will skip most of the topics discussed in the videos (because you already learnt them through this preliminary work). For those of you who are already familiar with the topics, the videos offer a quick reminder and a good way to test your knowledge.
After the videos and before coming to the lecture, you should be able to answer the following questions:
- What physical processes are involved in stars that keep them shining?
- What is the H-R diagram and what is it good for?
- What kind of a star is our own Sun?
- What is solar wind?
- What is a star's spectrum?
- What do spectral lines tell us about the star?
If, after the videos, you have questions or if something is still unclear, write the question down and make sure to ask it during the lecture!
