Practice English rhythm and stress
Find a text with an audio to train your ear and practice the rhythm of English.
Pay attention to variation of weak/strong forms and stressed/unstressed words
and syllables in speech.
Go to the
British council web site and choose a text on one of the topics
available with an audio and a transcript.
1) Listen to the whole text and, as you listen, underline or note down phrases or words that you would like to learn to pronounce better (make a copy of the script for you if necessary).
- Go to an online dictionary and practise the pronunciation of the individual words you selected.
2) Listen to the whole text again and
choose a paragraph or section of the text (e.g. 6-10 lines) for
practising intonation, sentence rhythm and the variation of stressed, strong
forms and unstressed, weak forms.
- Practise by pausing the audio and
repeating a sentence/part of sentence at a time.
- Then practise by reading the text
simultaneously with the recording, at the same pace with the reader. Imitate
the rhythm and intonation.
