Overview - Academic Textbook Project

For the reading part of the course, you will complete a textbook project, where your reading selection is related to your field of study. The materials and assignments introduce you to reading processes that can help you to improve your study skills. Although you may have your own way of approaching reading, the course takes you through well-established methods for effective learning.

General framework

Here is the general framework for the textbook project (details given in assignments)

  • Survey an electronic textbook
  • Study one-to-two chapters in detail (i.e. vocabulary and SQ3R assignments)
  • Write a summary (following the summarizing guidelines)
  • Focus on language (i.e. formal/informal language, reporting verbs and summarizing phraseology)
  • Learn to use Turnitin and to reference correctly

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course (see also SISU), students will be able to

  • Read academic texts more efficiently
  • Demonstrate an ability to understand academic texts
  • Document sources properly and select strategies to avoid plagiarism
 

Textbook requirements

  • Electronic academic textbook (other literature not suitable; your teacher should have access to it and accept your book choice)
  • Contains primarily written text (not pictures or other visuals)

How to pass the course

  • Complete all assignments (at CEFR B2 level or highter)
  • Hand in weekly assignments on time
  • Follow instructions carefully
  • Check the assessment criteria

Upload your completed assignments in the portfolio template

  • The template is available in MyCourses
  • Follow the instructions for naming your portfolio and updating the Table of Contents (TOC)

Course grading

  • 0-5

Assessment criteria

  • Completion of all assignments
  • Assignment instructions followed carefully
  • Contents of assignments are relevant and appropriate
  • Weekly assignments submitted to MyCourses as scheduled (= on time)
  • Language proficiency meets a minimum level of B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference to Languages (CEFR) scale
