Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Kurssin suorittanut opiskelija hallitsee arkkitehtuurin teorian keskeisimmät ilmiöt ja käsitteet ja kykenee suhtautumaan nykyarkkitehtuurin ilmiöihin analyyttisesti ja kriittisesti. Opiskelija pystyy seuraamaan arkkitehtuurin teoriaa käsittelevää keskustelua, jäsentämään arkkitehtuurissa esiintyviä koulukuntaeroja ja kehittämään omaa arvomaailmaansa, arkkitehtuurikäsitystään ja ammattikuvaansa.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Syventävä tutustuminen arkkitehtuurin teoriaan. Perehdytään arkkitehtuurin teorian ajankohtaisimpiin ilmiöihin ja nykyarkkitehtuurin (1980-luvun jälkeisen) teorian keskeisimpiin teoreettisiin koulukuntiin. Sovelletaan arkkitehtuurin teorian näkökulmia suomalaisiin arkkitehtuuriesimerkkeihin. Kurssilla luetaan arkkitehtuurin teoriaan liittyviä tekstejä, keskustellaan niistä, tehdään teoreettisia analyyseja kirjoittamalla lyhyitä analyyseja ja laaditaan esitelmiä ja keskustelualustuksia.

Details on the course content (applies in this implementation):

In spring 2019, Theory of Architecture 2 explores architectural thinking expressed in modern public libraries in Finland. We’ll study some architecturally esteemed library examples and discuss them on the basis of students’ analyses and presentations. We’ll also read and discuss a selection of theoretical literature on modern architecture and library design and approach our topic through some writings by the architects and their contemporaries.

The course is a seminar-like series of class meetings where we will study and discuss our interpretations of the course literature as well as the architectural examples. The coursework entails 3 elements: READING, ANALYSIS and PRESENTATION.

READING: for each class, you will read 2-3 texts that relate to the course topic and write a short summary of your interpretation of the texts (recommended length c. 600 words / 2-3 pages).

ANALYSIS: you will visit 5 libraries (listed on the MyCourses course homepage) and analyse their architectural and functional aspects, contribution to the library typology and contemporary architecture as well as your own architectural experience on site.

PRESENTATION: you will prepare a short (c. 5 slides / 10 minutes) presentation of each of your library analyses (5 presentations in total) for the class; please feel free include video and/or any other visual material besides photographs.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Joka toinen viikko kokoontuva seminaarityyppinen kurssi ja 1 loppuseminaari yhteensä 7 kertaa á 2,5 tuntia. Jokaiselle tapaamiskerralle on oma lukupakettinsa ja tehtävänsä. Hyväksytty kurssisuoritus edellyttää läsnäoloa kurssin tapaamiskerroilla ja annettujen tehtävien suorittamista.

Elaboration of the evaluation criteria and methods, and acquainting students with the evaluation (applies in this implementation):

Theory of Architecture 2 meets 7 times every 2ndweek for 2.5 hrs per class. The classes consist of discussions of course literature, some lectures and the students’ library presentations.

The completion of the course entails your presence at all the classes and completing all the coursework. Absences can be compensated by doing independent extra work that must be pre-negotiated with the teacher. The compensation task is usually a smallish writing assignment such as a literature review or an extra presentation at the class.

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Details on calculating the workload (applies in this implementation):

The course yields 5 credit points (133 hrs) which, at a rough estimate, entails 9.5 hrs of work per calendar week. The workload covers the following types of activities:

  • 18 hours in the 7 classes
  • 20 hours of site visits and architectural analysis
  • 70 hours of reading the course literature and preparing the text summaries
  • 25 hrs of preparing presentations for the classes

As the course language is English and the course texts are in English, the workload depends greatly on the individual student’s language skills and experience in reading and writing academic English.

Kursseille ottamisen prioriteettijärjestys Aalto ARTSissa 1.1.2018 lähtien (Taiteiden ja suunnittelun akateemisen komitean päätös 10.10.2017).

Prioriteettijärjestys on seuraava:

1.    opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu pääaineen/ohjelman pakollisiin opintoihin, ja on opiskelijan HOPSissa aikataulutettu ko. lukuvuodelle

2.    vaihto-opiskelijat, joiden opintosuunnitelmaan kurssi on ko. lukukaudelle hyväksytty

6.    opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu sivuaineen pakollisiin opintoihin

7.    opiskelijat, joilla kurssi kuuluu sivuaineen vaihtoehtoisiin opintoihin, ja joilla vaihtoehtoisia opintoja on opiskelijan tutkintovaatimusten mukaan vielä suorittamatta

8.    erilaisten liikkuvuusopintojen kautta kurssille hakeneet opiskelijat (Aalto-yliopiston sisäinen liikkuvuus, JOO-opinnot ym.)

9.    muut opiskelijat

Kursseilla, jotka on tarkoitettu monialaisiksi, voidaan käyttää kurssin osaamistavoitteisiin soveltuvaa prioriteettijärjestystä (esim. UWAS-kurssit), huomioiden kuitenkin yliopiston velvoite mahdollistaa opiskelijan opintojen eteneminen ko. tutkinnon tavoiteajassa. Priorisointijärjestys ei toistaiseksi koske yhteisen opetuksen yksikön järjestämiä valinnaisia kursseja eikä tohtorikursseja.

Kurssille ottamisen priorisointipäätös ei vaikuta opettajan oikeuteen asettaa kurssille esitietovaatimuksia.
