On completing the course students are able to:

- analyse the different elements of the urban and regional structure, such as the landscape, land use, production and service functions as well as the networks that link these together.

- apply in planning work the central data that describe communities.

- describe the factors influencing the change of the urban and regional structure, the different scales and the urban region as a dynamic system.

- analyse the features of the planning area and the political, social and cultural framework of the planning task.

- recognise the structural modalities of societies as well as the influence of space, time and costs on accessibility and utilise these in planning.

- prepare a strategic plan in cooperation with students representing different fields.

- act productively in different roles in a group; for instance, as chairman, reporter and provider of feedback.

- utilise topical research data as a basis for their own planning approach

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

- The basics of regional municipal and strategic planning

-Factors that influence the change in the urban and regional structure and its networks, in particular accessibility.

- The operational environment of structural planning, such as the globalisation of the economy, climate change, interaction with different stakeholders, public-private cooperation, multiculturalism and segregation.

- The principles of sustainable development in structural planning.

- Characteristic features and dimensioning of the central functions of the city and urban region.

 

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

Lectures, seminars and course exercises. Course portfolio.

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

- Lectures and reflection 24 + 48 hrs

- Assignments, their preparation and reporting 70 hrs

- Excursion (site visit), preparation and reporting 12 hrs

- Interim and final critiques, preparation and reflection 16 hrs

- Familiarisation with the literature and analyses based on the material 72 hrs

- Preparation of presentations 8 hrs

- Writing a portfolio 16 hrs

Before participating in studio courses student need to have finished their bachelor studies and applied for the bachelor's degree. (Bachelor’s degree in architecture, landscape architecture or equivalent discipline.)

The order of priority for admitting students to courses at Aalto ARTS 1.1.2018 onwards (approved by The Committee of Arts, Design and Architecture on 10.10.2017)

The order of priority is as follows:

1. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have scheduled it for the current academic year in their personal study plan (HOPS);
2. exchange students for whom the course is a part of his/her officially approved learning agreement and scheduled to be taken during the current semester;
3. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have not completed it yet;
4. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major’s or programme’s alternative studies and has been scheduled in the student's PSP (HOPS) for the current academic year
5. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major’s or programme’s alternative studies and who have not completed the requisite number of credits for alternative studies yet;
6. students for whom the course is compulsory for their minor;
7. students, for whom the course is part of his/her minor subject’s alternative studies and who have not completed the requisite number of credits for alternative studies yet;
8. students who have applied for the course through a student mobility scheme (internal mobility within Aalto University, flexible study right (JOO) studies etc.);
9. other students.

 

Courses that are intended to be multidisciplinary (e.g. UWAS courses) may apply an order of priority based on the learning outcomes of the course, while bearing in mind the university obligation of enabling students to complete their degrees within the normative duration of study set for the degree. The order of priority does not apply to courses organised by the Centre for General Studies or doctoral courses.

This decision on the order of priority does not influence the right of the teacher to define prerequisites for the course.
