When Daily Life Was Extraordinary: Documentary Cinema in People’s Poland and After (week 16)

Documentary cinema was always a political battlefield: What’s real to one might look like a gross falsification to the other. How close can we get to the real by “merely” filming it? How “real” is the world we see and touch – in realpolitical terms? And aren’t often the disruptions more telling cum typical than the day-to-day-ordinary? Poland developed an especially rich, complex and contradiction-happy documentary culture after 1945: While some pre-WWII experiments already suggested a variety of unique sensibilities at work and play, things really started to get going under state communist rule – People’s Poland quickly became part of the international non-fiction vanguard, a place and role the country never relinquished since, no matter the political system. During the course we’ll look at a vast variety of examples ranging aesthetically from full-fledged direct cinema via various experimental approaches to more personal, essayistic attempts at making sense of life. Prerequisites (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): Suositellaan elokuvan historian kurssien 1 – 4 suorittamista ennen elokuvan historian erityisalueiden kursseja.

Olaf Möller's course takes place from Monday April 15th to Thursday April 18th, everyday from 9 am to 4 pm.
