Credits: 5

Schedule: 07.01.2019 - 02.04.2019

Teacher in charge (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Henry Gustavsson

Teaching Period (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Spring 2019 (periods III-IV)

Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

  • student learns to do basic geometrical and structural design of a road or street,
  • student learns to apply the theoretical data by doing the dimensioning of her/his own discipline (for example geotechnical, pavement or rock engineering),
  • student learns to behave as a participant in a project group,
  • student learns to analyze and evaluate the site investigation data and create new design based on the data,
  • student understands, how a real consultant project is working,
  • student get to know colleagues from industry and learn their way of working  and
  • student learns to work and co-operate with other designers and to present the outcomes of the design.

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Project course is a practical design project which includes aspects from geotechnical, rock and highway engineering point of view. The content of the course is to produce needed design documentation of a road. The documentation will include 3D-terrain model with soil and rock layers of the design area. The road planning will be done taking into account subsoil and rock properties and combining all existing and new infrastructural elements together. In addition to the 3D model, some additional documentation, like description of the design case, dimensioning of structures and 2D maps and cross-sectional output documentation will be achieved.

The students (max. 20 students can be admitted) are divided into project groups, which include experts (students) from geotechnical, road and rock engineering areas. The teaching method is problem based learning, so that each group produces all the needed design and 3D inframodel planning and documentation for a street/road. Teachers for the exercises will be mainly engineers from consulting companies.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Lectures, Exercises, Project work, Presentation of the outcomes.

Assesment based on self and peer-evaluation, design documentation  (design model, site description, calculations, project work) and presentation of the outcomes. Test based on lecture and exercise materials and InfraBIM Requirements (YIV2015).

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Lectures (14h), Exercises (36h), Project work (80h), Presentation of results (2h).

Study Material (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Material will be announced in the beginning of the course

Substitutes for Courses (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Rak-32.3020 Kalliorakennussuunnittelu (partly) or Rak-50.3135 Geotekninen suunnittelu

Prerequisites (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

1st year  Geoengineering MSc-studies (min 50cr).

For road/street designers GEO-E3040 Geometric Design of Roads is compulsory prerequisite for this course; for Geo and Rock designers Advanced level courses. Basic Novapoint skills  are recommended for all attendants.

Grading Scale (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

0-5

Registration for Courses (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Registration through WebOodi. Please see WebOodi for the registration dates.

Max 20 students, primarily for 2nd year Geoengineering Master Program students.

Further Information (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Teaching language is English but part of the exercise materials and Novapoint tutorials are mainly in Finnish because the real project in Espoo is done using Finnish code of practice.

Can be used for geotechnical and rock designer's FISE (www.fise.fi) competence.
