After taking the course, students will:

- be able to make observations and analyse interactions in a variety of situations

- have sharpened their listening, conversation and questioning skills

- be able to give and receive feedback on interactive skills

- be able to outline, illustrate, justify and target their subject matter

- understand the principles of group dynamics and be able to analyse their own role in it

- have increased self-confidence in verbal communication skills and be aware of their strengths and areas for improvement

- be able to obtain information from verbal communication and be motivated to develop their own interaction skills

- understand the significance of interaction in different contexts, e.g. in university study, scientific endeavour and working life

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The course treats interaction skills through a number of subcategories: interaction-related information, skills, attitudes, motivations and ethics. Central themes include the image of the speaker, feedback, listening, presentation, stage fright and group communication. This course should be taken before other verbal communication studies.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

The forms of instruction include: conversational lectures (10 %), work in pairs or small groups (20 %), experiential and active-learning work methods (60 %) and written learning assignments (10 %).

Two credits are given for 30 hours of preparation for lectures and completion of learning assignments; three credits for 57 hours. (Includes preparing for lectures, group work and written learning assignments.)

Passing the course requires 80 % attendance in contact teaching.

Workload (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020): 

Contact teaching (lectures and exercises): 24 h.

Learning assignments and preparing for lectures: 30 h (2 cr) or 57 h (3 cr).
