Details on the course content (applies in this implementation):

Abstract Algebra is a part of
Discrete Mathematics that many other areas of Mathematics are based on.
Particularly the concept of symmetry is central and has determined the
development of Mathematics as an entirety over the last centuries.

This
course will try to give an introduction: our main topic will be the
group and its theory. Should time suffice, we might be able to give an
example, where finite groups are important for possible applications.

The student should be familiar with basic proof techniques, sets, functions, and relations, especially modular arithmetic and the congruence relation. These are covered on the course MS-A04XX Foundations of discrete mathematics and in the lecture notes: Metsänkylä-Näätänen, Algebra, sections 0, I, II, matematiikkalehtisolmu.fi/2010/algebra.pdf).
