Teaching Period (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

V-I (Spring - Summer)

Learning Outcomes (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

  • Basic understanding of scientific research methodology
  • Planning, safely conducting, evaluating, and reporting empirical experiments in the fields of engineering, design and business
  • Interdisciplinary team working skills

Content (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Students work in interdisciplinary teams to identify myths or urban legends and test if those hold true by conducting empirical field tests. In addition to planning and executing the tests in order to bust the myths, the students are required to explain the phenomena in a scientific way. After exploring previous studies on the topic, the students create hypothesis and a research plan for the empirical tests. Some of the suggested research plans are selected for the empirical testing phase. After the summer break the students implement their plans and make videos in the style of the TV series “Myth Busters”.

Assessment Methods and Criteria (valid 01.08.2018-31.07.2020):

Evaluation criteria: Quality of the research report, the execution of the empirical tests, and the outreach of the study results
