Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the genres of information design and their uses
  • Produce visualizations and infographics learning the best information design practices
  • Process data given to them and how to find appropriate design solutions based on how human perception and cognition work

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

We look at mechanisms relevant to presenting abstract phenomena and statistical data, as well as visual communication of other kinds of information. We learn about the properties of human perception and design solutions that facilitate effective communication of knowledge. We look at established genres of information design, such as maps, statistical graphics, diagrams and scientific illustrations, network diagrams, and wayfinding systems. A variety of course assignments are given, in order for the students to learn how to apply the theoretical principles discussed in a range of practical design cases.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Lectures, discussion, assignment-oriented tutored studio work, critiques. Tutoring and feedback are given both personally and at a group level. Successful completion of the course will require that each student be in attendance for 80% of the course. Students will be required to give course feedback in order to successfully complete this course.

Workload
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    Class work 48 h, independent work 33 h
