CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Students will work on given assignments. However, they are encoureged to "go experimental", mix techniques and challenge the boundaries of photography. Guidance on contents and techniques are given in individual studio tutorials, discussions and group meetings.

The workshop includes lectures on contemporary topics related to experimental working methods.

  • Applies in this implementation:

The title for the theme is

    Picturing Untouchable

How to make photographic images of issues and things that are beyond
    immediate contiguity (kontakti, kosketus,
läheisyys, samanaikaisuus)? How to activate studio to visualise something
    absent?

Experimental Studio focuses on picturing something
that is at that very moment untouchable or exists mainly as a thought. Within
this course, studio appears as a stage or setting which, as such, provides a
platform for imagining. Studio is a location and a tool to create, to give
visual appearances to something not yet existing in that form. Photography,
then, follows studio settings as a fixer: within this course, photography is
activated to transform the imagined into visual objects.

Following this point of departure, studio can
also function as a time capsule. While in the studio, pasts can become present,
and futures can be pre-concretised. Studio can also make distances shorter:
i.e. Mururoa Atolls can resurface in Väre studios. Similarly, studio has a
potential to function as an operating room where something hidden and invisible
can be studied and turned into pictorial form.
