The Taste for Beauty: Éric Rohmer

Éric Rohmer was the most enigmatic master of the French New Wave – as well as its lone consistently commercially successful. On the surface, Rohmer's cinema always seemed easy to recognize and describe in a superficial, faux-witty fashion: It's the movies in which mainly young women talk about philosophical subjects usually pertaining to matters of the heart. But this is merely an aspect of a much vaster and more complex œuvre containing not only experiments in literature and cinema that gave shape to a handful of formally absolutely unique films but also a sizable amount of television documentaries and essays whose importance for Rohmer's artistic vision remains largely unexplored. During the course we'll look at examples of all the different genres and aesthetics found in Rohmer's work for cinema and television. Also, we'll read a few of his texts to discuss how his writings on film connect with his practice as a writer-producer-director. In doing so we might discover that his cinema has become ever more urgently modern through the decades.
