DESCRIPTION.
Documentary shooting is usually dependent on visiting and revisiting the same places, people and themes. Thus, one of the challenges and necessary skills for documentary filmmakers is to be able to keep seeing even when people and places become familiar for us. This course understand repetition as a method in documentary cinematography and explore it from a practical and theoretical point of view.
This workshop course will cover how to prepare for documentary shooting regarding content and technical approach, as well as aspects of collaboration between director and cinematographer. The course mixes a “learning by doing” approach with documentary lectures and case studies. Through filming assignments, students will experiment with visiting and revisiting the same locations during the course. The case studies will deepen understanding on the collaboration and the technical choices and their relationship to the content. Students will also read and discuss some seminal texts in documentary cinematography.
