CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    During the workshop students will plan and execute varying type of rehearsals together with other students of cinematography and / or other students from other disciplines.

    Advanced MA-lab is a co-production of students in cinematography, production design and costume design and also possible with other ELO's disciplines. Projects during the workshop are combinations of research- and practice based small case-studies that are focusing to the required special techniques in pre-, shooting- and post-production stages and the effect of those techniques on the planning and execution of cinematography, production design and costume design.

    During the workshop students will also get familiar with the history of chosen special techniques, will see content related films and other material and plan a rehearsal together with other students. This rehearsal will be also executed together during the workshop. All material will go through the post-production and final outcomes will be screened and evaluated together later in the semester.

    During the workshop students will also focus in developing their communication and co-operation skills.

  • Applies in this implementation:

    During the workshop we will explore

     THE TERMINOLOGY: Virtual production, final pixel, previzualisation, game engine, real-time...

     VIRTUAL LOCATION SCOUTING:  instead of exploring set designs on 2D screen, with the aid of VR headsets and tablets it is now possible for HoDs to step into the digital space and plan the shoot “on location”.

    PREVIZUALISATION of digital effects: being able to view the digital effects in real-time while shooting helps creative decision-making and communication between HoDs.

    WORKFLOWS & TECH: the skillsets, expertise and camera technology needed for visualizing digital effects during shooting.

    THE TOOLS available for quickly capturing locations and sketching & building digital environments

    FROM POST PRODUCTION TO PRE-PRODUCTION: Can we skip the post-production phase altogether? Experimenting with shooting "final pixel, a technique used for example in Disneys The Mandalorian series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUnxzVOs3rk

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    Evaluation criteria based on student’s crew and own reflection about their co-operation skills and students own share of co-operation. Student’s own progress evaluated during different stages of the workshop and in common feed-back session at the end of the workshop.

    Common screenings, lectures and feed-back.

    Possibility for extra credits according the working diary.

Workload
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    The order of priority for admitting students to courses at Aalto ARTS 1.1.2018 onwards (approved by The Committee of Arts, Design and Architecture on 10.10.2017)

    The order of priority is as follows:

    1. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have scheduled it for the current academic year in their personal study plan (HOPS);
    2. exchange students for whom the course is a part of his/her officially approved learning agreement and scheduled to be taken during the current semester;
    3. students for whom the course is compulsory for their major/programme and who have not completed it yet;
    4. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major s or programme s alternative studies and has been scheduled in the student's PSP (HOPS) for the current academic year
    5. students, for whom the course is part of his/her major s or programme s alternative studies and who have not completed the requisite number of credits for alternative studies yet;
    6. students for whom the course is compulsory for their minor;

    9. other students.

    Courses that are intended to be multidisciplinary (e.g. UWAS courses) may apply an order of priority based on the learning outcomes of the course, while bearing in mind the university obligation of enabling students to complete their degrees within the normative duration of study set for the degree. The order of priority does not apply to courses organised by the Centre for General Studies or doctoral courses.

    This decision on the order of priority does not influence the right of the teacher to define prerequisites for the course.
