Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The students are able to perceive the expressive potential of for example:
  • virtual spaces , environments and characters
  • interaction of real and virtual spaces and characters
  • motion capture of characters or objects
  • real time movement or camera tracking
  • creation of virtual spaces, characters and costumes
During the course the characteristics, meanings and dynamics of virtual elements will be explored from the design and aesthetic point of view. We will look into methods and tools to create and perceive virtual elements in relation to real world milieus.
The qualities and functionality of virtual spaces and characters will be researched in current production environments (such as virtual studio). We will also explore how new emerging technologies (like virtual and augmented reality applications) affect it.

Depending on the content of each workshop more specific learning outcomes may vary.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Lectures, students own research, assignments that focus on for example
    • virtual environments and characters
    • real time tracking and motion capture
    • the design and aesthetics of virtual elements.
Assignment are done through practical work and demonstrations. The possibilities of virtual expression are explored through current production environments like the virtual studio, and emerging environments and technologies, like projection based AR and VR.

  • Applies in this implementation:

The Virtual Space and Body-course will focus on exploring projections as a tool for augmenting spaces, environments or characters and learning about virtuality. During the course, students will create virtual spaces, characters and costumes with the help of projection and learn the basics of projection mapping. The characteristics, meanings and dynamics of virtual elements in the real world will be explored from the design and aesthetic point of view.

In the course, the students will form small working groups, to work on their own project, that will explore the themes and subjects of the course. The course will be held as hybrid teaching, as the first week will be in distance teaching in Zoom, and the second week in contact teaching in Roihupelto Studio 3.

The course presumes that the student has a basic knowledge and skills to produce and manipulate digital images with software (for example Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Blender or something similar). The course will not go over the basics of digital image production, but focuses on the artistic aspects of projections, space, environment and body.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

80% attendance and complered independent exercises. Development of skills during the course, motivation and constructive participation. Attending the first lessons is required.

For accepted credit, the student needs to be present and in time on the course. Absensce on the first day results in removel from the course. Absences can not exceed 20% of the courses total amount of hours. Absences must be discussed and agreed upon before hand with the course teacher (excluding sick leave). The student must compensate absences with extra assignments, that must be negotiated with the course teacher and returned in a set period of time.

Workload
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Lectures, site visits, discussions, supervised and independent exercises, group exercises.

    Contact teaching: 32 h
    Supervised and/or independent work: 32 h
