Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
The MA INTRO course clarifies the offering, pedagogies and mindset of the master programs in design. The course prepares the students for the shift in the study objectives from undergraduate to master studies. Contact teaching and tasks structure student learning about their own goals and orientations in design and in relation to future societal needs. As a startup to ongoing studies, the course has a social agenda to create peer networks across programs in the department.
The course is scheduled so that students participate in the ARTS and MA Program orientations at the same time.
Applies in this implementation:
The course will be organised online (zoom). This section will be updated soon.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
The assessment is done continuously of:
- Participation in contact teaching sessions
- Contribution to individual and group tasks
- Completion of peer-evaluation
Two contact days during the course are mandatory to pass: an introductory session and the final presentations. Passing the course requires attending 80% of contact teaching sessions. Absence during contact teaching may be made up by completing an assignment agreed upon with the teacher. Students unable to meet the required level of attendance (acceptable reasons are those exceptional circumstances such as health or residence issues), should contact the teacher as far as possible in advance to explain and discuss completion.
Workload
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
The course is taught as an intensive teaching module during Orientation Week (before Period I starts).
2ECTS is equal to a 54-hour workload. MA INTRO course workload includes:
- 8h Contact teaching including lectures, workshops and presentations
- 11h In class and independent work on assigned tasks
- 1h Peer-evaluation
- 7h time to think
Remainder of workload in the course is for attending orientation activities arranged by Aalto ARTS and students own MA Program in the Department of Design. That workload is not detailed here.
