Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

During the course the students will learn to understand and study their environment through an artistic and experimental approach. Students learn to put this approach into perspective of their own fields of studies and practices. The emphasis of the course will be on the mechanism of pressure systems in our urban environment and on the concrete and circumstantial influence they have on our actions.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

During the course the student will be made acquainted with systems of pressure form a physical (mechanical), social, experimental and artistic point of view. Examining one concrete pressure system, the distribution of water in an urban surrounding (ie. Espoo and Helsinki water towers), leads to philosophical, experimental, artistic, social, political and juridical questions in connection to water, ownership, pressure, aesthetics and justice.

The course consists of lectures, “hands on”, experimental workshops, excursions and independent working processes. There will be an exhibition in the end of the course.

  • Applies in this implementation:

During the course the students will learn to understand and study their environment through an artistic and experimental approach. Students learn to put this approach into perspective of their own fields of studies and practices. The emphasis of the course will be on the mechanism of pressure systems in our urban environment and on the concrete and circumstantial influence they have on our actions.

The course is practice based. It is important that you are able to attend the sessions (at least 80%).

During the course we will visualise in different ways pressure systems around us. We will for example use experimental drawing (no previous knowledge needed) to register pressure. We will build experimental pneumatic pressure system models in a workshop (possible hybrid event), we will listen to a lecture of a painter using pressure as a theme and look in to how experimental filmmaker work with the theme of pressure. We also will listen to an expert on environmental water law on the theme of global water circulation in connection to legal issues of water distribution and the pressure on society in this field.

Guests in the course: Petteri Eskelinen (sculptor), Viljami Heinonen (painter), Antti Belinskij (professor on environmental water law).

We will collect all our experimental material produced during the course and make an online exhibition with a selection of the material.
