LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • discuss the position of design in their own discipline and how it compares to the position of design in other disciplines.
  • elaborate on the work practices of designers in different disciplines, including the tools and methods used for design.
  • recognize an opportunity for how to extend their current use of design and design thinking in their work based on the use of design in another discipline.
  • carry out an interview using an interview guide.
  • make a visual and textual representation of a design process.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    The course provides students with an introduction to design and the rise of design thinking in innovation. Overarching goal is to help students find their own way in adopting more designerly work practices for their work. Students are familiarized with a basic reading package on design – introducing them to fundamental concept and ideas on design and designing  – throughout the course. Through group work, in-class discussions and interviews with professionals, students are tasked to uncover the scope of design and designers’ work in their own discipline; including the tools, methods and work processes used by designers. They are also tasked to locate how they could advance their own practices for design and design thinking in learning across disciplines. In visualizing their findings, students are introduced to fundamentals of graphic design and visual communication. The learning in the course is supported through a series of weekly assignments and a project.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

    The final grade in the course is set in relation to individual and group assignments and tests which the students complete individually and in groups throughout the course.

     

    Students need to attend and display active participation in at least 80% of the contact session in order to receive a grade in the course. The introductory lecture and the final presentation are mandatory.
