LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will learn about different ways of thinking through online curating as a tool to understand and discuss the necessities and implications connected to such practices. What does it mean to migrate from the real to the digital? What is gained and lost in such migrations?
Learning Outcomes for this course vary from the critical to the technical and offer useful skills and knowledge for students across all fields of art, science, business and technology who are interested in visual image production and online curation.
Students will learn:
-Several open-source softwares and tools for creating and designing online curated spaces and develop web-based back-end proficiency in designing online architectures for organising creative content.
-Technical skills will be supported by critical readings of texts focusing on the topic of the seminar
-Through interdisciplinary group work, exercises and case studies the students will discuss, clarify and implement agreed, shared terminologies and languages for working across visual cultures, digital and technical fields.
-The final project consists of constructing an online curated space with their peers and the students resulting in knowledge of online content publishing in visual spatial formats.

‘Simulated Spaces: Online Curating Across Disciplines’ focuses on the practice of co-creating online spaces for those interested in visual and sonic research, web design, exhibition development, digitalised archives, open-source software and browser-based interfaces for research. The course is best suited to those with skills and interests in the areas of graphic and web design, coding, gaming, exhibition making, media interfaces, creative technologies and creative publishing however no specialist knowledge of online exhibitions or curating is needed and students from all schools are encouraged to participate.
The course aims to give you an insight into the processes and methods of online curating across different disciplines in art and science by introducing case studies and practical tools to curate the web. Participants will design their own curated space online, built and published using open-source software for online exhibitions.
Throughout the course, we will address the approach of online curating through multi-disciplinary group work, lectures, case studies, group exercises, close readings, guest speakers and a final project which will be a website based, online curated project.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:
1) Attendance: 20% of the grade - Each 3 h weekly session with contact hours
2) Participation: 40% of the grade - Each class session includes 1.5 hour of group work, 3.5 hours of group work per week outside class time - 2 hours per student of individual work for reading texts for discussion
3) Final project: 40% of the grade - Production of joint web-based interfaces for group work on seminar thematics.

Students and their group work will remain at the core of this course, with a 45 minute session in each weekly lecture on the good, the bad and the ugly (examples of what works and what is a misuse of tool or resource of online curating) keeping a reference point to current practice and developments in this field.
In addition to critical reviews of such online curated content spaces, there will be readings on digital content production culture across arts, media and corporate spaces, open source tools for digital exhibition building, tours of existing exhibitions spaces in Aalto and Helsinki for reference to the tradition IRL exhibition space.
