Introduction to the task and technique of the day

-10.30-17 Independent work on the day's task, which is "Impressions" part 2 .:

    -From 9.15-10.30

Introduction to the task and technique of the day

-For 10.30-17 Independent work on the day's task, which is: "Blue-red-stilleben" :

Combine both cold and warm shades of these colors in layers to make the most of the different nuances of these colors. We learn the technique of layer paint, the optical mixing of color, and the utilization of the audibility of color in watercolor work. Individual guidance.

-10.30-17 Independent work on the task of the day, which is: “Reflections”.

Paint perceptually, something like that, or an object that reflects or mirrors light in an interesting way. Concrete examples could be, for example, the sea, a swimming pool, crystal glass, an aquarium, etc ... (References could be, for example, David Hockney's pool paintings, Monet's ponds, or Susanne Gottberg's paintings of drinking glasses.)

Practice utilizing the audibility characteristic of watercolor technology in describing light and the feel of material. Testing the expressive possibilities of layer painting techniques and embossing techniques within the theme of the day. Individual guidance.

    -From 9.15-10.30

Introduction to the task and technique of the day

-At 10.30-15 Independent work on the day's task, which is: "Fragment".

Paint something you choose, or an object (e.g. a cress flower, or a doll’s face, just to name a few examples) in as much detail as you can. Take advantage of the tools you learn during the week, such as layer painting, optical mixing, and wet-dry variation in your detailed painting. Depending on your own rhythm, make either one or more paintings rich in detail. Individual guidance.

    -At 3 to 5 p.m.

Write a work plan with your next week’s work in mind. Make a written presentation of your own artistic process and the theme and approach I want to take advantage of in your second week of work on the course. How are you going to vary your theme? What is your relationship to perception, or to the material possibilities of watercolor? Also, make concrete daily goals for your work, that is, write down a kind of reading order; what do you paint and where? Think about what the outcome of your work will be next week and how you want to present it? Maybe you’re making a little book about your watercolor paintings, or is the end result a series of paintings? Send me the text no later than during friday 13th of Aug by e-mail: hanna.westerberg@aalto.fi

DETAILS

Study Material
  • Valid 01.08.2020-31.07.2022:

Will be announced separately at the start of the course

  • Applies in this implementation:

THESE ARE THE MATERIALS, YOU NEED TO BUY BY YOURSELF FOR THIS COURSE:

COLORS: main colors, i.e. yellow, red and blue both cold and warm. In addition to this, I hope you buy ocher, viridian green (note that this shade may appear under different characters with different names), and magenta.

Good artist-quality brands include Schminke, Sennelier, or Winsor & Newton. The so-called Leningrad watercolors, i.e. the Russian watercolors sometimes sold under the name White nights, are good enough aswell. They are most often sold in boxes that contain twenty-four colors.

    Brushing:

-At least one brush with a round tip and a sufficiently large size (eg size 8-12). I have hair brushes are good, but often a little expensive and they wear out. Synthetic brushes can also be good today. In the material distribution of the Finnish Painters' Association, for example, you can find brushes of the following brands that are good enough: Hanart 700, Lineo Colinski, and Saphire (half sable and half nylon).

-One wider flat brush, which can be, for example, goat hair or synthetic fiber. If the brush is slightly wider (e.g., 1.8 inches in goat hair brushes), then it is suitable for wetting paper, or if it is thinner, then it is suitable for painting. In addition to this, a spray bottle for spraying flowers is also well suited for wetting paper, i.e. either one or a flat brush sufficiently wide is also necessary for wetting the paper.

Optionally, you can also purchase a masking mask (its other names also include masking fluid, or liguid masking film). It is a colorless liquid substance obtained from artist supply stores. Pigment has often been added to it to blend on paper. If you want to leave the bottom of the paper exposed when you are afraid it will discolor during painting, you can paint these areas using overlay.

PAPERS: The school offers Arches roll paper approx. 2 m / students. If you want to buy watercolor paper in loose sheets, or pads (eg Fabriano, or Hahnemuhle), you can of course do so.

In addition to this, the school provides trays for attaching papers and adhesive papers.

    My recommended material stores:

-Material of the Finnish Painters' Union, opens 3th of Aug, Address: Erottajankatu 9 B, 00130 Helsinki. Attention: you will get 20 % discount when you show your student card!

    -Tempera

-Aaltopahvi, Aalto-Yliopisto Library, Harald Herlin Learning center, Otaniementie 9, 02150 Espoo
