LEARNING OUTCOMES

On a successful completion of the course, students

are familiar with various ways in which artists use moving image in visual arts. For example the materiality of a work or it´s relation to space and time may be at the core of the work.

- have learned ideas, aspects, technical skills and methods related to moving image works

- are able to apply their new skills and practices to their own work.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    Moving images workshop is a hands-on course with the aim of producing and discussing new works made during the workshop.

    The workshop focuses on moving images from the point of view of visual arts. Many artist using moving images have their background in e.g. the traditions of performance, sculpture, conceptual art, photography etc. Cinematic narrative or story telling is not necessarily important at all. Instead for example the materiality of a work or it´s relation to space and time might be in the core of the work.

    The students are encouraged to move in the crossroads of different traditions, even to collide them. Combining different things make us see them in a new light and possibly create something new and unforeseen. As an example of combining text and moving images could be Julian Rosefeldt´s Manifesto. In the works of Richard Moss we can see how even just a technique brings content to a work. There is no one topic for the workshop. During the course we will look at the works of several artists from Gillian Wearing to Lauri Astala and participants are able to collect material and ideas for their own work. Santeri Tuori will also discuss his own artistic practices and show his works at his studio in Vallila.

    Sound may play a central role in a work. Sound designer Mikko Hynninen will discuss sound design and it´s technique. He will also have a practical sound clinic during the course where participants have the possibility to get help with their own project.

    The participants are expected to know how to use basic video editing tools so that they can import, edit and export video files. However, there will also be a video clinic for the participants during the course, so that they can get some help in practical editing. In any case, before the course it is advisable to get to know and try a video-editing program in practice. The school has Adobe Premiere Pro. Students can access Lynda´s Web tutorials for independent learning.

    The foundations for the course are laid in the first days of the course. It is extremely important to be present!

    For the first meeting all participants should bring one of their earlier works with them. It can be a photograph, something moving or something else.

    Requirements: 80% attendance and all assignments completed.
