Between Realism and Abstraction: Dancing on the Screen (2 ECTS)

There's something deeply paradoxical to dancing in cinema: At the same time, the art reveals itself as a harbinger of absolute truth and a haven for total artifice. You can't fake someone's ability to dance – while dancing becomes the ultimate interruption of realism in cinema, certainly its classical narrative variety. In this course we'll look at all kinds of examples of dancing on the screen, big and small, ranging from ballet documentaries via musicals to experimental films using dance as part of their respective formal strategies. Through this, we might also discover the many meanings dance and dancing can have in cinema – as well as culture.
