Through the World with Merchant Ivory

They were a most astonishing band: A US-American Protestant (James Ivory, director), an Indian Muslim (Ismail Merchant, producer) and a German-born Jew (Ruth Prawer Jhābvālā, writer). They worked together for 45 years, made films all over the world, invented and reinvented themselves regularly, knew triumphs and failures, only to remain in the depth of their hearts always the same: adventurers in cinema and life. In this course we'll follow the trajectory of independent film's most enduring partnership – from their dense early Indian years, through their experimental 70s, via their time in moviedom's sunlight as some of the world's most celebrated filmmakers, into their long twilight from the mid-90s till their last production in 2009.
