LEARNING OUTCOMES

In the Genre course student will learn different aspects of the documentary mode, ranging from a particular approach to documentary filmmaking, the in-depth study of a documentary author, a theoretical concept as explored in documentary, a particular historical period of documentary film history, etc. Depending on the subject of the course students will learn creative filmmaking techniques, gain historical perspective or analytical/theoretical tools to expand their knowledge of documentary film.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    This course features varying contents. The course will explore particular approaches to the documentary mode such as autobiographical documentary, observational documentary, essay film, participatory approaches, performative documentary, etc. The course can also study a documentary author in-depth, focus on a particular historical period, or explore a theoretical concept as applied in documentary. Occasionally, this course might take the form of a workshop in which students will carry out a film exercise.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Lectures, film screenings and discussions. Completing the course require students active participation and the completion of a written assignment or oral presentation. Depending on content, the course might occasionally take the form of a workshop in which completion of a film exercise will be required.
