South Asia, South-West Asia & North Africa are widely misunderstood regions, and accurate representations of life there are almost non-existent in Western media. When depicted, the regions are portrayed as monolithic, and their people are generally branded as backward, uncivilized, and dangerous by negative orientalist tropes. Within the course, you are invited to learn more about the role of film in the non-Western world, learn to read films, and are introduced to relevant film philosophical texts.

The film examples we will approach range from cult masterpieces to more popular mainstream works. In the process of the course, you will get to learn to adapt and produce your own texts in relation to the film works discussed and screened. By understanding films in relation to contemporary politics and culture, films themselves become the primary texts, studied in relation to theoretical approaches outside Eurocentric media and criticism.
