LEARNING OUTCOMES
- give knowledge of factors to be considered in the design of prestressed concrete structures
- understand the difference between pre- and post-tensioned systems for structural behaviour
- learn to design and analyse prestressed concrete and concrete composite structures
- understand the roles of different limit states in the design of prestressed structures
- learn to consider the influence of time-dependency of materials on structural reliability
- learn to consider specific features of precast concrete structures: connections, stability, prevention of progressive collapse, ductility
- give knowledge of the design and manufacturing of Finnish precast concrete products
(The course is a part of the requirements for designers of reinforced concrete structures in Finland)

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
Structures with several materials and their analysis, classification of prestressed constructions, limit state design of prestressed concrete structures, losses of tendon stress, concrete composite structures, engineering design of structural details including anchoring zones, ductility of structures with prefabricated members.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
valid for whole curriculum period:
Written examination, home exercises to be made during the course and participation in obligatory teaching. The approval of home exercises is a precondition for the participation in the examination. Home exercises and participation in obligatory teaching are valid only for the lecture period under concern.
Weight of examination in approval: 100%. For well-graded obligatory home exercises (75% of the maximum marks), the examination grade is raised by one if the grade is 1, 2, 3 or 4. The home exercises are lecture period specific and are considered in the marking of the examination for examinations held before the start of the next lecture period of the course.
Workload
valid for whole curriculum period:
Lectures 22 t/ 17%, Exercises 16 t/ 12%, Individual tuition 8h/6%, Independent work 84 t/ 63%, Examination 3 t/ 2 %
